Following the mid-term retirement of Chisago County Sheriff Rick Duncan, effective May 4, the Chisago County Board of Commissioners appointed Brandon Thyen as sheriff at its May 2 meeting. Thyen has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 20 years, the last two as chief deputy.

The board also appointed Captain Justin Wood as chief deputy. Wood has been with Chisago County for 14 years.

Duncan submitted an official resignation letter on April 26 citing medical reasons for his retirement. He’d recently had a third surgery on his foot and was facing two months off duty to recover.

Duncan had also been under investigation after a complaint was filed against him. According to Chisago County Attorney Janet Reiter, the investigation is complete and the results are not considered public information. Reiter said she has reached out to the Minnesota Data Administration for guidance since the position of sheriff is elected and information on the investigation may be made public.

Thyen will hold the sheriff’s office until the election in November determines a successor. There are candidates who have indicated they have an interest in running for the position.
