An Isanti businessman who was previously charged with second degree murder for a cold-case investigation going back to 1993 is now charged with first degree murder in that same case.
According to court documents, 54-year-old Jerry Arnold Westrom of Isanti was indicted by a grand jury of first degree murder in the 1993 suspicious death of Jeanie Childs. Following the indictment, a warrant for Westrom’s arrest was issued on Friday, June 26, with Westrom turning himself in on Monday, June 29. He is currently being held in Hennepin County Jail pending the posting of a $2 million bail.
Westrom was originally arrested in February, 2019 for the stabbing murder of Childs. According to the original arrest report, investigators linked Westrom by comparing DNA found at the scene of the 1993 murder to DNA first obtained from a genealogy website in 2018. Investigators further matched Westrom to the crime after obtaining additional DNA from a napkin Westrom was seen wiping his mouth on at a hockey game in January, 2019.
Westrom’s next court appearance is scheduled to be an omnibus hearing on July 24.
