Donald R. Westerberg

Donald Roger Westerberg, 89, of Cambridge, passed away on Friday, Oct. 25, 2019, at his home.

He was born Aug. 13, 1930, on the family homestead in Springvale Township, Minnesota, to John and Lenore (Mattson) Westerberg. Donald was baptized and confirmed at the Cambridge Lutheran Church.

He attended Cambridge Schools and after graduating from Cambridge High School, he began working at the Cambridge Dairy.  Don joined the Air National Guard and was activated during the Korean War, served stateside and was honorably discharged in May 1952. Upon returning home, he went back to work for the Dairy. He would go on to work for the University of Minnesota Agriculture Department in the barley project, from which he retired.

He was united in marriage to Geraleen Splittstoser on March 24, 1951, in Ogilvie, Minnesota. They would make their home in the Edgewood area of Cambridge and raise their six children.  

Donald was actively involved in AA and was sober for 48 years. Don and Gerri, along with Tom and Diane, attended several AA conventions over the years.

He enjoyed fishing, spearing, trapping, golf and riding his John Deere lawnmower. Don loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and babysat his great-grandchildren while Gerri continued working.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert and Paul Westerberg. Don is survived by his wife Geraleen “Gerri”; children Dale (Colleen) of Braham, Gary of Cambridge, Deb (Maynard) Cramer of Stacy, Steve of Cambridge, Randy (Ginny) of Cambridge and Kevin (Lori) of Cambridge; 19 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; sister Joyce (Lowell) Clifford of Bloomington, Minn.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 31, 2019, at Cambridge Lutheran Church with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment Cambridge Lutheran Cemetery. Online condolences at Arrangements with the Carlson-Lillemoen Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Cambridge.
