Guest Column: We are ready for "back to school!"

It’s hard to believe but the start of the 2019-20 school year is less than a month away!

Preparations for the school year have been underway since last spring, and staff are getting excited to welcome students back to class.

Construction continues apace and the high school, middle school and North Branch Area Education Center will look much different to returning staff and students. We expect that construction will create a hiccup or two at the beginning of the school year and, if so, we appreciate your patience as we navigate those issues.

Regardless, it is amazing what Kraus Anderson can accomplish over a few short months, and we are very grateful for their organization and professionalism. One more summer to go and all the work approved by our community will be complete!

Custodial staff have been hard at work cleaning our sites from top to bottom. It is a massive task, especially when construction is going on, and I am deeply grateful to the hours they put in making our schools spic-and-span. They take obvious pride in the work they do!

A few reminders as we approach the start of the school year:

School supply lists are all updated for 2019-20 and can be found at this link: www.isd138.org/Page/233.

Schools will be sending out back-to-school messages to families late this week, and the school district will send handbooks and welcome packets on or around Aug. 13. As has become our practice, these messages will be sent via email to all families with an address on file with the district.

Those without an email address can expect to receive these items in the postal mail. Sending these items electronically is a great cost savings for the school district in printing and mailing costs.

Mark your calendars for Friday, Sept. 6, 4-6 p.m. and attend our Grand Opening Celebration at Sunrise, the middle school and high school!

It’s a great opportunity to come and see for yourself how your tax dollars are transforming the learning environment here at North Branch Area Public Schools. We hope to see you there!

Dr. Deb Henton is superintendent of North Branch Area Schools.
