Katherine Duram, of Cambridge, and a student at University of Minnesota–Morris, is the assistant coordinator of the Morris Area Farmers Market (MAFM). In addition to managing community activities, vendors and advertising, Duram plans new strategies to grow the market’s vendor and customer base.
Working with Morris Healthy Eating and Stevens Community Medical Center, Duram helps to implement the Power of Produce program, which introduces children to a variety of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables and is supported by the Statewide Health Improvement Program, Minnesota Department of Health.
This seasonal program helps children learn about preparing, tasting and understanding the foods available at the market. Other market activities include cooking demonstrations, live music and education about local produce and seed saving.
“I hope that the farmers market will encourage people to consider eating more fruits and vegetables, even those that they are not sure what to do with,” Duram says.
